What Your Front Door Color Says About You
Painting your front door may be a pint-sized home improvement project, but it packs a punch. Choosing your color wisely can even increase your home value. The new shade you select will give your home some personality. It will also say a lot about yours.
My house will be painted next month, so I’ve been deeply enmeshed in warm whites. Picking the color is easy. Picking the right shade, not so much. There are many other color elements to complement: Roof, pavers, stonework, brick, windows, natural wood elements, etc.
Choosing a front door color is so much more enjoyable.
In the olden days, there weren’t that many paint colors to choose from. Options mostly depended on where you lived, as paint was often made using local materials. A region’s soil, therefore, would influence the paint colors that were popular on homes.
These days, color options are limited only by your imagination. Color theorists claim that the color a person chooses for the front door reveals a lot about their outlook on life.
How many personalities can you pick out in your neighborhood?
BLACK
Black is sophisticated and classic. It evokes luxury, elegance and boldness, and suggests power, simplicity and neutrality.
BLUE
Blue makes you feel safe and evokes calm, spirituality and trust. Dark blues lend an air of conservative elegance. Light blues give a relaxed, friendly feel.
BROWN
Brown is down to earth. It means stability and support. It’s friendly, practical and dependable. It can also represents things that are old-fashioned or well-established.
GREEN
Green makes you feel optimistic and relaxed. The person who lives here is peaceful and cooperative. Green is the easiest color on the eyes and is often used to balance a design.
ORANGE
Orange serves up vitality and happiness. Like red, it draws attention and shows movement, but orange is not as overpowering. It portrays energy, but is also inviting and friendly.
PINK
Pink is nurturing, playful and romantic. It represents youth and tenderness. It’s inherently sweet, cute and charming. That said, pink is another color of opposites: It can call to mind either innocence or passion.
PURPLE
Purple is for the creative. It evokes royalty, wealth and mystery. Lighter shades of purple soothe and calm. Use lighter purple to imply romance and health. Darker shades make a design look rich and luxurious.
RED
Red is the most dynamic of all colors, as it has the power to trigger seemingly opposing emotions: passion and danger. Use red to draw attention to a design element but in moderation so as not to overwhelm.
YELLOW
Yellow is the most energizing of all warm colors. It makes you feel happy and spontaneous and is associated with laughter and sunshine. Yellow also reflects light and can irritate the eyes, so use sparingly or as an accent color.
